Scope
This first-version bedside implementation is restricted to children aged 0 to 3 years.

Wheezing history
Count wheezing episodes per year during the first 3 years of life. The stringent threshold is >=3 episodes/year.

Parent with asthmaEither parent has a history of asthma.
EczemaHistory of eczema or atopic dermatitis.
Minor criteria
Allergic rhinitisHistory of allergic rhinitis.
Wheezing apart from coldsAny wheezing not associated with a cold or viral upper respiratory illness.
Peripheral blood eosinophil percentage on CBC differential. The minor criterion is met at >=4.0%.

Clinical noticeEducational clinical-support artifact only. Do not use the API alone to diagnose current asthma or replace clinical assessment.

Context and use

Stringent API is positive if age <=3 years, wheezing >=3 episodes/year, and (>=1 major criterion or >=2 minor criteria).

Major criteria: parent with asthma or eczema. Minor criteria: allergic rhinitis, wheezing apart from colds, eosinophils >=4%.
